Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
