The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
