Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
